Key Differences between SOT Chiropractic and McTimoney Chiropractic
One of the questions I hear most often from people who are new to chiropractic is, “Oh! There’s more than one style of chiropractic?!”
The answer, as I am sure you have now guessed is, yes! After the initial 5 years of study required before qualifying as a Chiropractor, many Chiropractors choose one or several styles to specialise in, and continue to hone their techniques and skills in those styles. Although initially qualified in the McTimoney style, I have also furthered my studies in Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT), and I have summarised the differences and benefits of each below.
SOT Chiropractic:
Approach and Techniques: SOT is a comprehensive, gentle method focused on aligning the relationship between the sacrum and the occiput. It uses specialized blocks, pelvic wedges, and specific adjustments to facilitate the natural movement and positioning of the spine and cranium.
Focus Areas: It often emphasises the connection between the spine, pelvis, and the nervous system, addressing issues related to neurological function and overall body balance.
Application: SOT is commonly used for addressing complex spinal issues and associated neurological symptoms.
McTimoney Chiropractic:
Approach and Techniques: The McTimoney method is known for its holistic approach and gentle, whole-body adjustments. It focuses on restoring alignment and balance to the entire musculoskeletal system through quick, precise, and light adjustments.
Focus Areas: McTimoney chiropractors emphasize maintaining the natural harmony of the body and focus on promoting overall health and well-being, rather than just treating specific symptoms.
Application: This technique is popular for its gentle nature, making it suitable for patients of all ages, including infants and the elderly.
Both SOT and McTimoney chiropractic methods offer unique benefits tailored to different patient needs. SOT is often chosen for more intricate neurological and spinal problems, while McTimoney's gentle approach is ideal for patients seeking a holistic and minimally invasive treatment.
Which technique is best for you will be determined at your consultation, and it may be that a combination of different techniques would suit you best. If you have a preference or have any concerns, please do not hesitate to raise these with us at any point during your treatment journey.
